They were the team that everyone loved to hate. The Washington Commanders - nicknamed the "Over the Hill Gang" because of their large number of veteran players - were one of the most dominant teams in the NFL during the early 1970s. George Allen coached them to success, and many of the players on the team also played for him when he coached the Los Angeles Rams from 1966-1970.
The Commanders were known for their tough, physical style of play. They prided themselves on being a team that no one could beat. And they usually lived up to that billing, winning games by large margins. But even though they were one of the most successful teams in the NFL, they always seemed to be flying under the radar.
